iPhone Dictation Not Working? Fixes + a Better Keyboard Option
Mic key missing, dictation greyed out, or it stops mid-sentence? Fix Apple Dictation on iPhone — or switch to a continuous voice dictation keyboard.
When iPhone dictation fails, it is usually a settings issue — not a broken microphone. Work through the checks below in order. If dictation “works” but keeps cutting you off, skip to the continuous-dictation section.
Quick fixes for Apple Dictation
1. Turn dictation back on
Settings → General → Keyboard → Enable Dictation. If it is already on, toggle it off, wait a few seconds, turn it on again.
2. Make sure you are on the Apple keyboard
The mic key appears on Apple’s keyboard. If a third-party keyboard is active, tap the globe key until you are back on Apple’s, then look beside the space bar.
3. Check Screen Time restrictions
Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps & Features (wording varies by iOS). Ensure Siri & Dictation is allowed. If the Enable Dictation switch is greyed out, this is the usual cause.
4. Restart after an iOS update
Updates sometimes leave dictation in a bad state. Toggle dictation, restart the iPhone, try again in Notes first (simplest text field).
5. Confirm the mic works elsewhere
Record a Voice Memo. If that fails, it is a hardware or permission issue, not Dictation settings.
Dictation works — but keeps stopping
That is often by design. Built-in dictation is tuned for short bursts and ends after silence. For drafting emails or long iMessages, you want continuous dictation on iPhone that runs until you tap stop.

FAQ: Apple Dictation not working on iPhone
Why is Apple Dictation not working on my iPhone after an update? Toggle Enable Dictation off and on, restart, then test in Notes. If the switch is greyed out, check Screen Time restrictions first.
How do I fix dictation when the mic key is missing? Switch back to the Apple keyboard with the globe key. Third-party keyboards do not show Apple’s mic; that is expected.
Dictation starts, then stops — is that a bug? Not always. Built-in dictation ends on longer pauses. For longer replies, use a continuous voice dictation keyboard instead of restarting the mic every few sentences.
Still stuck?
If Apple Dictation stays broken after the checklist, try dictating once in Notes on the Apple keyboard after a reboot. If the mic key never returns, check managed-device profiles (work/school) — organizations sometimes disable dictation.
Otherwise, install Voicetation and use the globe key when you need voice dictation that does not quit mid-thought.
